The Political Science master’s degree program aims to equip students with an in-depth comprehension of modern political science's fundamental concepts, theories, and empirical discoveries. The curriculum ensures a comprehensive grasp of key areas within the field, encompassing political theory, American politics, comparative politics, and international relations.
Graduates pursue diverse paths, including Ph.D. or law programs, teaching roles at community colleges or high schools, and careers in government, politics, business, or the non-profit sector. We encourage students to incorporate practical experiences such as teaching assignments and internships into their academic journey.
You will be immersed in foundational courses in American politics, comparative politics, international relations, political theory, and political science methods, alongside a variety of electives. Along the way, you'll be supported by outstanding faculty dedicated to graduate education and committed to student success during the program and beyond.
Graduates in political science are equipped for diverse careers in government, nonprofits, and the private sector. They can become campaign consultants, strategists, data analysts, lobbyists, and research specialists, utilizing their skills in research, analysis, and communication to influence policy, advocate for change, and support decision-making processes.

Community Legal Information Clinic (CLIC) is an undergraduate legal information clinic that has been providing legal information to students and community members for over 50 years. CLIC also provides paralegal practicum opportunities with students working directly under CLIC’s four supervising attorneys.
Earning a master’s in political science is a smart career step, as this degree can help you qualify for advanced professional roles, postsecondary teaching positions or even doctoral studies.
Take foundational courses in American politics, comparative politics, international relations, political theory, and political science methods—and put what you learned to practices through experiential internships.
Students can be teaching assistants or instructional aides and have hands-on experience with the Town Hall program which is key to undergraduate learning. Our graduate students can work in this space and learn how to lead in the classroom and community.
Chico State is home to the Upsilon Delta chapter of Pi Sigma Alpha, the National Political Science Honor Society. Applications can be obtained from the Political Science and Criminal Justice Department office.
The Pre-Law Society is a student-run organization devoted to providing prospective law students at CSU, Chico with the opportunity to learn more about law school and the legal profession. The organization accomplishes this goal by hosting a diverse program of workshops, guest speakers, and events.
All prospective students must first apply for graduate admissions through Cal State Apply. Supplementary materials will either be collected electronically via Cal State Apply or sent directly to the program department.

Graduate students can qualify for traditional financial aid by filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or California Dream Act Application (CADAA).
Scholarship Opportunities
California State University, Chico, provides merit and scholarship awards to deserving students for graduate studies, and many go unfilled. Scholarships are provided based on a variety of criteria, including academic merit, financial need, participation in clubs and activities, volunteer and community involvement, major and career goals, etc.
The typical feeder major for this master’s program are political science, sociology, criminal justice, and public administration. You can still pursue this degree if your undergraduate degree was in a different field. Occasionally, some prerequisites may be required to bring you up to speed. See your advisor for details.
The MA in political science is a 30-unit program which can be completed in two years. Working professionals who are part-time students typically take an extra semester or two.
