Help people live full, healthy lives. The public health program covers important services, like healthcare, mental health, nutrition, and assisted living. But it also helps you understand the big picture. It connects the dots between the air we breathe, access to clean water and nutrition, and the state of public infrastructure—all things that affect our quality of life.
You’ll learn how to assess needs, plan and implement health programs, and coordinate with healthcare providers. Our graduates are ready to lead and manage teams in clinical settings, nonprofits, and service-based organizations. They are also prepared for postgraduate degrees in nursing, occupational therapy, and other medical-related fields.
Our interactive program includes plenty of practical work, giving you a broad understanding of healthcare systems and the challenges they face, ranging from equity to women’s health, grant writing, and administrative processes. You’ll also complete 240 internship hours during your final semester.
Our public health program offers several competitive advantages for graduates looking to stand out in the job market. It is the only standalone public health bachelor’s degree accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health. Graduates have the additional benefit of being eligible to test for national credentialing as a Certified Health Education Specialist.
Some prominent employers of our grads include:
Public health helped me understand more about my family back in Merced... I didn’t know how your zip code really determines how long you live.
The public health program prepares you with many of the skills needed to be a leader outside the classroom.
Our department offers two student clubs, the Health Professionals Association and the Chico Healthcare Administration Club. Both provide opportunities to network with peers, attend professional development sessions, hear from guest speakers, and socialize.
Our program’s learning lab is the community. Many of our classes provide service-learning experiences where you’ll practice skills taught in class in a real-life setting. This gives you the experience you need to step into careers upon graduation.
Our robust study abroad program offers a wealth of opportunities to develop an invaluable global perspective on public service and to learn from cultures across the globe.
