Imagine you’re from another planet and you’ve been tasked with learning everything about life on Earth—that’s a sociologist’s perspective. Our online program is for curious people who love asking big questions: why some groups have more power than others, or how our identities are shaped by social forces like race, gender, and class.
Our online sociology program is one of the oldest and most distinguished in the country, boasting a diverse group of award-winning faculty and nearly 25 years of experience in online education. We’ll cover pressing social issues, social movements, relationships, global affairs, and more, preparing you for a creative, purpose-filled career in social work, public administration, nonprofits, government, education, entrepreneurship, and more.
Attain a high-quality online education in fewer units than any other online sociology program in the CSU. You’ll gain critical thinking and analytical skills on research projects that span an array of topics, from dance clubs to the complexities of mental health and suicide prevention.
You’ll benefit from our demonstrated know-how in structuring student learning in proven and effective ways to maximize opportunities for students' academic success. All online courses have asynchronous options, and in some classes, you can interact with faculty and classmates in real-time.
Our students learn how to conduct research, analyze data, and express ideas verbally and in writing, all highly sought-after skills in the job market. Some alumni work for regional, national, and global nonprofit organizations, while others pursue careers in teaching, counseling, and with cutting-edge tech firms.
Some go on to master’s and doctorate programs in sociology and become professors or professional researchers.
A few companies and organizations our alum have gone on to:

Our program goes beyond the classroom. Engage in meaningful research with passionate faculty and staff, who show off the variety of ways sociology looks at the world.
Professor Danielle Hidalgo spent four years physically and digitally following three women DJs in an immersive research experience into dance culture.
Sociology professor Nandi Crosby examines how cultural and racial differences can and should shape our conversations with each other.
2024's Outstanding Academic Advisor Award winner, Michell Armeanu has proven to be a dedicated, empathetic lecturer and advisor in the sociology department.
Taylor Coutts’ goal of obtaining a college degree was put on hold after an epilepsy diagnosis. But Chico State’s distance learning program, and a lot of help from her service dog, Davy, opened doors that were suddenly slammed shut.
Imagining podcasts could be a great way for her students to connect with their coursework virtually, professor Marianne Paiva began recording where she found the best acoustics.
