Quality Education. On Your Time.

Online Learning

Chico State’s online degree and degree completion programs provide a rigorous and recognized education equivalent to an on-campus degree. Whether you're transferring into a four-year program or completing an already-started degree, studying online offers an affordable, convenient way to balance life and education.

Make Your Choice

Our undergraduate degree completion programs are designed for transfer or returning students, and allow you to complete a bachelor’s degree in as little as two years. Or move at a slower pace to accommodate career or family needs.

You can also choose from four online master’s programs and two certificate programs, all built on the same high-quality, accredited education as our on-campus offerings.

Chico State is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), so your degree is recognized and respected wherever your path takes you.

Faculty Support and Training

Creating online courses involves more than just posting a syllabus and turning on a camera. Chico State’s expert faculty collaborate with instructional designers to craft valuable educational experiences that fully utilize technology. That's why we're ranked as one of the best online universities in the United States.

Online Student Communities

  • Student Organizations and Clubs

Getting involved with student groups is a great way to grow professionally. It’s no different as an online student. Many programs feature online chapters of student groups, such as the Online Sociological Association of Chico State.

  • Canvas Convos

Canvas, our learning management system, has online discussion boards that can be as lively a forum for conversation and debate as any classroom. You’ll build real relationships with your classmates and faculty online as you collaborate on group projects and experience your education together.

  • Network on the Internet

Recently, our Multicultural and Gender Studies program sponsored an alumni career panel on Zoom, open to both online and on-campus majors. That’s just one example of how we ensure you get the tools to build your network, even if you’re far away.

  • Student Resources

Online students at Chico State are, first and foremost, Chico State students—which means you have access to vital student resources such as our library, bookstore, student success workshops, and more.

Getting Started

Ready to take the next step? Here’s what you need to know about applying, eligibility, and how to begin your Chico State online journey.

Designed for transfer or returning students with 60 or more units completed, our undergradate degree completion programs follow the transfer student admisions process with the same transfer admissions requirements as for on-campus students, which include coursework and GPA requirements.

Graduate requirements vary by program. In addition to Chico State's general graduate requirements, your program may have additional prerequisites or application materials.

Review the requirements and steps to apply for all programs on the Admissions website.

You can typically apply for undergraduate programs during two main windows each year:

  • Fall term: October 1–July 1
  • Spring term: August 1–September 30

Deadlines may be extended, so be sure to check the most current dates before you apply. Check the Apply page to confirm your deadline.

Graduate application deadlines vary by program, but typically open October 1 for fall start and August 1 for spring start.

Online courses follow the regular University Schedule. The fall semester begins in late August and the spring semester begins in late January. New undergraduate students may begin classes in either fall or spring, depending on when they apply. Graduate programs vary and you should check the individual program page for information.

Yes. You may be able to enroll in a course without formal admission through Open University, depending on space availability and with instructor permission. Note: financial aid is not available to cover Open University fees.

No. Your transcript will not indicate that your degree was completed online.

No. Chico State's undergraduate online programs are designed as degree-completion programs, so students must complete at least 60 units (including general education) prior to beginning the program. View transfer admissions requirements.

Most students finish the online degree-completion programs in about two years, but you can go at a slower pace by taking fewer classes each semester. An academic advisor can help you plan a pathway that works best for you.

Your Online Learning Experience

Chico State’s online programs give you the support and connection you need—on a schedule that works for you.

Most online courses are designed to fit your schedule while still providing structure.

Depending on the program and courses, your classes may be:

  • Synchronous (live, scheduled sessions)
  • Asynchronous (completed on your own time)
  • Or a combination of both

You’ll complete weekly assignments and interact with faculty and classmates through live sessions, discussion boards, email, and other tools. Each instructor determines how their course is delivered.

You should plan to spend a similar amount of time on coursework as you would in an on-campus class—typically around 10 hours per week for each course.

Most online courses are not self-paced, so you’ll need to stay on track with weekly readings, assignments, and exams. Your course syllabus in Canvas will outline all expectations and deadlines.

Strong time management is key to your success. You’ll set your own study schedule and balance coursework with work, family, and other commitments—so it’s important to choose times when you can focus and stay consistent.

Online undergraduate programs allow you to start in either the fall or spring. Graduate program structures vary. Programs may be synchronous (fixed class times), asynchronous (completed on your own time), or a combination.

Depending on your program, you may also have flexibility in how you schedule your courses. You’ll work with an academic advisor to create a plan that fits your goals.

Yes. Online courses are designed to keep you connected with both your instructors and classmates.

You’ll interact through discussion boards, email, live sessions, and other communication tools—so you’re supported throughout your program. You're encouraged to be active and engaged in your classes by engaging in discussion board or chat rooms, asking questions during class of faculty office hours, etc.

Yes. Chico State online courses are taught by Chico State faculty.

Courses are developed with support from instructional designers and backed by the full resources of the University—so you get the same academic quality as on-campus programs.

Yes. Some online degree programs offer elective courses.

Availability varies by program, so check your program page or connect with an advisor for details.

Support, Cost, and Technology

From academic advising to technical help, Chico State gives you the tools and support you need to succeed—wherever you’re learning.

You’ll have access to many of the same support services as on-campus students.

This includes academic advising, tutoring, counseling, and career support—available online or by phone. Explore available resources on the Student Resources & Services for Online Students page.
