PAST RESEARCH: My past research has mainly focused on foliar fungal endophytes (fungi that live inside the leaves of plants) and the biogeography of their interactions in an attempt to describe how changing environments influence plant-fungal interactions and explain the assembly processes of fungal communities.

PAST RESEARCH: I have broad interests in the experimental analysis of human behavior, including particularly the issues of behavioral rigidity and behavioral flexibility, decision-making, choice, and symbolic behavior, particularly in social situations, both in the lab and in naturalistic settings. I also have an interest in social cognition and social coordination and action. Finally, I have an interest in the psychology of food and eating. In addition to these experimental areas, I am very fond of conceptual/philosophical work. I have supervised Research into the influence of temporal perspective and acculturation as predictors of eating behaviors, exercising, and bodily image among LatinX undergraduate students.

PAST RESEARCH: My work focuses on bacteria that convert reduced, soluble manganese to insoluble Mn minerals. This microbial activity affects the global geochemical cycling of carbon and metals and can be used for bioremediation applications. I use genetic tools to understand how and why bacteria oxidize manganese.

FIELD OF STUDY: I am an interdisciplinary scholar whose work fits well at the intersection of political science, criminology/criminal justice, justice studies, and sociology. Generally, I study the causes, lived experiences, and mechanisms that perpetuate social inequality in American society, coupled with grassroots activist responses to inequality and vulnerability. As an extension of this focus, my work examines philosophies of justice and activism, access to justice, the politics of social inequality and trajectories toward equity, and the relationship between law, society, and culture.

PAST RESEARCH: Throughout the last several years, my work has focused on social inequality, resource accessibility, grassroots activism, and social justice in rural communities. I look forward to continuing this scholarship throughout the North State. Most recently, I started a new project examining Chico State students' experiences at the intersection of social inequality and the legal/criminal justice systems and how these experiences have shaped students' educational experiences and outcomes

PAST RESEARCH: Dr. Malkowski’s research lies at the intersections of persuasive communication, medical professionalism, and public health controversy. Her work has appeared in Health Communication, Journal of Medical Humanities, The Review of Communication, and Journal of International & Intercultural Communication, in addition to other edited collections. She is co-editor of a special issue of Rhetoric of Health & Medicine that inaugurates a research trajectory for scholars invested in the public nature of health as well as a forthcoming collection entitled Covid and...How To Do Rhetoric in a Pandemic (Michigan State University Press) that explores how Covid amplified and conjoined pre-existing structural and social inequities in the United States.

My geoscience education research focuses on ways students learn best in the sciences, including active learning and inquiry-based lab activities.

PAST RESEARCH: 

I am interested in cognitive psychology, the scientific study of mental processes. Most of my Research has been on visual perception, specifically the processes by which the visual system takes in sensory information and organizes it into whole objects that can be recognized. I also have an interest in attention and working memory. By doing research in cognitive psychology, I have come to appreciate the ability to answer various questions by developing an appropriate methodology. I have recently worked with students on various topics, exploring the benefits of different research methods.

PAST RESEARCH: My research focuses on the intersections of gender history and capitalism in the eighteenth century. Previous projects have analyzed the economic experiences of widows, patterns of women’s investing, and the gendered implications of class consolidation in the revolutionary era and early republic.
