Chico Adelante Program

Peer-Plus Mentors

Adelante Peer-Plus Mentors are employed by the Adelante Program to support undergraduate students as they navigate their academic journey and prepare to envision their future as potential graduate students.

As a Peer Plus Mentor, you will be expected to be accountable to your mentees, your peers, and your supervisor by fully participating in program activities and seeking guidance when needed to support your mentees' academic success.

Your responsibilities as a Peer-Plus mentor will include supporting and guiding your mentees through various workshops, presentations, and activities geared toward preparing them for graduate school. A majority of this support work will be completed through Adelante's UNIV 298 Wayfinders: Forging a Path to Graduate School which will be held once a week (Thursdays 4-5:50 PM).

UNIV 298 will give you an opportunity to meet with your mentees and peer group weekly as well as connect with other Adelante peer groups. This is a brand new element of the Adelante Program for Fall 2022 and we hope it facilitates building community and engaging in additional in-person activities across mentee groups. You are not required to enroll in the course, but will be asked to support new Adelante mentees who are enrolled. Please be sure you have Thursdays 4-5:50 pm available for Fall 2022.

You will also be responsible to coordinate two meetings a month with continuing mentees who are not enrolled in the course. All mentees can attend these two monthly meetings and these can be of a social and community building nature. In addition, both Peer-Plus mentors and mentees will have Blackboard access for the Adelante Wayfinders Mentoring Program, which will provide information on the opportunities available and resources for all students.

Peer-Plus Mentor will:

  • Be matched with a peer group of 10-15 students based on major/minor or area of interest.
  • Support new Adelante mentees in Adelante’s weekly course meetings for UNIV 298--Wayfinders: Forging a Path to Graduate School. In-person Thursdays 4-5:50 pm. You are not required to enroll in the course.
  • Support new and continuing Adelante mentees by hosting two monthly meetings to build community and sense of belonging.
  • Encourage all mentees to attend presentations, workshops, and speaker events hosted by Adelante and partner programs.
  • Offer weekly mentoring by connecting with your mentees through email, phone calls, or text, and track all mentee contacts.
  • Attend Mandatory Adelante trainings. 1) Initial Adelante Onboarding June 21st 9-12pm via Zoom, 2) Collaborative in-person training before the academic school year (August 15th & 16th, 2022 9-3pm) and 3) Pre-Semester Refresh Training Spring 2023 (Date/Location TBD).
  • Attend Adelante’s Wayfinders Mentoring Program Orientation at the start of the Fall 2022 semester (Date/Location TBD).
  • Participate in Adelante's Leaders Learning Community. This will be a one-hour weekly check-in with Adelante's Student Success Coordinator to receive on-going training, support, and resources for yourselves and your mentee peer group.
