College of Agriculture to Host High School FFA Members for 51st Annual FFA Field Day

Announced on: Friday, Feb. 15, 2019

On March 9, 2019, California State University, Chico and Butte College are geared up to host a record number of high school students at the 51st Annual FFA Field Day. At this event, high school FFA Members have the opportunity to compete in one of 23 career development events coordinated and facilitated by undergraduate students and faculty in the Chico State College of Agriculture and the Butte College Agricultural and Environmental Science Program.

Each of the contests include the acquisition of skills and knowledge that students may use later in their prospective careers. Contests include agricultural sales, forestry, livestock judging, milk quality and dairy foods, agricultural welding and veterinary science. A full list of contests is online at http://ag.csuchico.edu/ffafieldday.

“The FFA Field Day provides the opportunity for high school students to engage in a competitive environment and develop lifelong skills,” faculty advisor Mollie Aschenbrener said. “It’s a time when our entire college has the opportunity to give back to FFA programs and the community.”

Agriculture education major and FFA Field Day chairman Matt Bongiovanni, a junior, competed in the FFA Field Day for four consecutive years in high school and described the event as a great opportunity for students to gain career development skills in their area of interest and apply them.

“The field day was a rewarding experience in gaining career skills in agriculture, but, consequently, it pushed me toward choosing to attend Chico State,” Bongiovanni said, ”It made such a huge impact on me, and now I am able to use those experiences to coordinate the event and give students that same impactful experience I had.”
