Womxn of Agriculture Club Established at CSU, Chico

Announced on: Tuesday, Oct. 08, 2019

A new club at California State University, Chico hopes to help women blaze trails in agriculture. More than 60 percent of students enrolled in the College of Agriculture are women, but that percentage varies significantly by major. Women make up 86 percent of the students majoring in animal science, but only 23 percent of those majoring in crops, horticulture, and land resource management.

“After being one of only three or four women in our plant science courses among all men, we decided that something needed to happen. We talked about starting a club for a while and it’s finally happening,” senior Chloe Dugger said.

Dugger and seniors Amanda Cox and Miriam Espinoza, with guidance from plant science professor Anna Medic, began the process to establish a new club within the college during spring 2019, and the Womxn of Agriculture was officially recognized by Associated Students this fall.

With the goal of empowering women entering careers in agriculture, the club plans on being a supportive and inclusive network for students with plans to host encouraging guest speakers from the agricultural industry. Womxn of Agriculture hopes to address the challenges women face but also opens their doors to all, recognizing that building relationships is the key to working through such challenges.

The officer team for the club are President Amanda Cox, Vice President Chloe Dugger, Secretary Saul Estrada, and Treasurer Jocelyn Garcia. At the inaugural meeting on September 24, the club had over 20 attendees and discussed ideas for community outreach and involvement for the semester. Following the first meeting, the team looks forward to filling out the rest of the leadership roles such as Inter-Club Council representative.

“We really want to encourage women to pursue leadership roles and higher education because through female representation, we can better address our concerns,” Dugger said.
