Professor Manisha Sinha will discuss the simultaneous rise of a formal overseas American empire and the long unwinding of what she terms the "Second American Republic" in the late nineteenth century. Sinha, a specialist in the history of slavery, abolition, and the American Civil War and Reconstruction era, is the James L. and Shirley A. Draper Chair in American History at the University of Connecticut and the recipient of numerous fellowships and awards.
