Biological collections are invaluable records that document species, but also biodiversity in changing habitats, landscapes, and climates. The Ahart Herbarium at California State University Chico contains nearly 130,000 specimens. Most of these specimens are vascular plants, but the collection includes bryophytes, lichens, mushrooms, and slime molds as well. Specimens are examined frequently by students and researchers from throughout California and North America—for simple plant verification to complex research.
Mr. Janeway will provide an overview of the Ahart Herbarium collections, then demonstrate the many tricks for extracting all sorts of useful information from the California Consortium of Herbaria (CCH2) database. He'll discuss the importance of collecting plant specimens, how anyone can do it, and give helpful hints on making sure your specimens are useful to herbaria and researchers for the future.
