Our hearts are heavy to share that Emeritus Professor of English Roger Kaye, who taught in the English Department at Chico State for 35 years, passed away on August 21, 2025. A deeply influential educator in the North State, Kaye inspired generations of students with his passion for literature and his unwavering dedication to teaching and mentoring. Born July 6, 1943, in Cleveland, Ohio, he was the son of George and Eleanor (Case) Kaye. He earned his undergraduate degree from Williams College and later completed his doctorate at Stanford University. After teaching for six years at the University of Pennsylvania, he joined Chico State in 1978, where he spent the rest of his career fostering a love of language, literature, and critical thought, until retiring in 2012. Kaye was known not only for his scholarship but also for his generosity of spirit. His personal library of more than 10,000 volumes was a treasure he eagerly shared with students and colleagues alike, reflecting a lifelong belief in the power of books to open minds and change lives. The University flag will be lowered in his honor on Tuesday, August 26, 2025. Friends may donate in his honor to the Chico Friends of the Library: PO Box 6952, Chico, California, 95927.
