KNOW THE SIGNS of Alcohol Poisoning and Opioid Overdoses. STEP IN. SAVE A LIFE.

Announced on: Wednesday, Oct. 01, 2025

At Chico State, we believe in a harm reduction. Every life is valuable and deserves access to support without judgment. Knowing how to recognize and respond to alcohol poisoning and opioid overdoses can save a life.

Know the Signs of Alcohol Poisoning
Alcohol poisoning is a medical emergency that can be deadly. If someone exhibits any of the following signs, call 911:

  • Confusion or inability to stay conscious
  • Vomiting while unconscious or unable to wake up
  • Slow or irregular breathing
  • Seizures
  • Hypothermia (cold, clammy, or blue-tinted skin)

Recognizing an Overdose:
Overdoses can happen to anyone. Whether intentional or accidental, opioids (including fentanyl) can slow breathing to dangerous levels.

Here's what to look for:

  • Slow, irregular, or no breathing
  • Unresponsiveness (won't wake up or react to touch)
  • Bluish, gray, or pale skin, lips, or fingertips
  • Pinpoint pupils
  • Gurgling or choking sounds

How Narcan (Naloxone) Helps:
Narcan is a safe, easy-to-use nasal spray that can reverse opioid overdoses and restore breathing within minutes. It won't harm someone if opioids aren't present, so if you suspect an overdose, use it.

Free Narcan and Fentanyl Test Strips Available on Campus:
WellCat Prevention, ESTM 150P (next to The Hub)
The WellCat Health Center, 601 Warner St.

DON'T RUN, CALL 911 - Know The Good Samaritan Law, Protect Yourself & Others
If you think someone is experiencing alcohol poisoning or an overdose, never hesitate to call for help. California's Good Samaritan Law protects both the person in need and the caller from legal consequences related to underage drinking when seeking medical assistance. Saving a life is always the priority.
