California Funk and Nut Art: Challenging Ceramics Through Humor
Friday, February 6 at 12:00 p.m., PAC 113

This presentation looks at California Funk and Nut Art in ceramics, movements that began in Northern California in the 1960s–70s, especially in the Bay Area and at UC Davis. Led by artists such as Robert Arneson and David Gilhooly, these movements focused on non-functional clay sculptures that were humorous and satirical. Funk and Nut Art used wit, playfulness, and exaggerated forms to challenge the rules of ceramics and tell imaginative, sometimes bizarre stories through clay.
