Fond Farewell: Coach, Lecturer, and Equity Advocate Shirley Smith

Our hearts are heavy to share news that Shirley Smith, who served Chico State for more than three decades as a dedicated educator, coach, and administrator, passed away on February 25, 2026. She was 92.

Born April 24, 1933, in Sepulveda, California, she was raised in Waterville, Kansas, in the rural community of Cottage Hill.
She earned her master's degree in physical education from San Jose State University in 1961 and joined the Chico State faculty later that same year. She went on to complete her doctorate in education at the University of New Mexico in 1969, further strengthening her commitment to teaching and student development.

Over a career spanning more than 30 years, Smith taught courses in physical education, physical fitness, and principles of competitive athletics. She also coached the women's swim team, where she found great joy in helping students grow both athletically and personally. Her dedication to students extended beyond skill development; she was known for creating an inclusive and encouraging environment where all students could succeed.

"She was incredibly accepting of every student, regardless of their skill level, and used her gift for coaching to help them achieve greater success and enjoyment in movement," said Abe Bailey, former dean for Student Affairs. "She was a favorite to many students and made a big difference by being both gentle and effective."

Smith played a key role in advancing innovation within her field. Working alongside Betty Lou Raker, she helped establish the Movement Design Center, introducing new technologies into physical education programs. Her commitment to fairness and inclusion later led her to serve for nine years as Chico State's director of Affirmative Action, where she advocated for equity with integrity and compassion.

In recognition of her contributions, Smith was inducted into the Chico State Hall of Fame in 1990. Colleagues described her as a valued mentor who combined empathy with high standards and left a meaningful impression on those she taught and worked alongside.

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Smith was known for her warmth, sense of community, and genuine friendliness.
Smith was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Alice Smith, and her sister, Ruth Ann. She is survived by Melissa and Travis Woodall; Mike and Renee Rice-Smith; many cousins and extended family members; and a wide circle of friends and former students.

A devoted member of the Center for Spiritual Living, Smith found deep community and connection there throughout her life.

The University flag will be lowered Thursday, March 26, in her honor. A celebration of life will be held Saturday, March 28, 2026, at 2:00 pm at the Center for Spiritual Living, 14 Hillary Lane, Chico, California.
