Exploratory Studies (Undeclared) Now Housed in Undergraduate Education and Academic Success

Announced on: Wednesday, July 22, 2026

Students who enter Chico State without a declared major are now part of Exploratory Studies, which is housed within Undergraduate Education and Academic Success (UED), located in Meriam Library, Room 338.

The term Exploratory Studies is being used intentionally. Research and practice in this area suggest that this framing is more supportive and student-centered than "undeclared," recognizing that students are not behind or lacking direction, but are actively exploring academic interests, strengths, and possible paths.

This move brings together a more coordinated set of supports for Exploratory Studies students. In addition to having UED as their academic home, students have access to a dedicated advisor, a faculty mentor, a student lounge inside the First-Year Experience space in Meriam Library 208, and a first-semester course, UNIV 120: Transitions and Transformation, designed to support academic identity, major exploration, and college success.

Cassandra Faith serves as the faculty mentor for Exploratory Studies in the role of Exploratory Studies Success Coordinator, helping connect students' academic exploration with meaningful faculty guidance and support.

Greg Morales has moved from Academic Advising Programs into the new role of Academic Advising Coordinator for Exploratory Studies (Undeclared). This is Chico State's first dedicated advising position for Exploratory Studies students. Greg will work directly with new, continuing, and returning students as they explore majors, select courses, understand degree requirements, connect with campus resources, and prepare to declare a major when they are ready.

Faculty and staff working with Exploratory Studies students are welcome to refer them to Greg at gmorales11@csuchico.edu or to UED in MLIB 338.

Please join us in congratulating Greg on this new role and in welcoming Exploratory Studies students into UED as their academic home during this important period of exploration and decision-making.
