Our hearts are heavy to share the news that Professor David Teja, who taught in the School of Education for 22 years, passed away on April 18, 2025. Born and raised in Yuba City, Teja was a deeply influential educator whose passion for special education in the North State inspired countless students and peers throughout his career.
Born June 9, 1962, Teja earned his bachelor's degree in political science from Chico State in 1987. When he introduced himself to students every year, Teja was humble and insightful about discovering his path to special education.
"I took a class in special education the last semester of my senior year and the seed was planted," Teja wrote. "I was graduating from Chico State and I finally knew what I wanted to do for the rest of my life! Isn't it funny how you end one journey and begin another?"
After a brief period working in retail management, Teja returned to Chico State and completed multiple teaching credentials in 1993, and a master's in education in 1994. After graduating, he worked in middle and high schools in Corning, Red Bluff, Oroville, and Chico, establishing himself as a regional leader in the field and a strong advocate for students and adults with developmental disabilities.
"David was one the kindest people who I have ever had the privilege of knowing," said Al Schademan, School of Education director and science education professor. "His passion for the teaching profession, especially for working with special needs students was incredible. And whenever we needed someone to step up to do a job, David was the first to volunteer. He was an inspiration to us all."
In 2014, Teja earned his PhD in learning and instruction from the University of San Francisco.
Teja is survived by his wife, Deborah; their children, Jordan and Josette; and their six grandchildren.
The University flag will be lowered on Tuesday, April 29, in this honor.
