What is the IRB?

The IRB is an administrative body established to protect the rights and welfare of human research subjects recruited to participate in research activities conducted under the auspices of the institution with which it is affiliated.

What is the IRBs purpose?

The IRB reviews research studies to ensure that they comply with applicable regulations, meet commonly accepted ethical standards, follow institutional policies, and adequately protect research participants.

Exempt, Expedited, and Full Board Review Categories

Human subjects research that does not meet the definition of "minimal risk" must be reviewed by the full board which meets on the third Friday of each month during the academic year.

Exempt and expedited IRB submissions do not have submission deadlines. Submissions, which present minimal risk, are reviewed on a rolling basis by the IRB chair, Ben Seipel.

Is my project more than minimal risk?

Upon receipt and review of each submission, the review category will be determined. If your submission requires review by the full board, you will be notified.

The next meeting of the IRB for the Fall Semester is Friday, April 18th. Cayuse Full Board IRB submissions must be received by Friday, April 4th.

If you have questions about the submission process, please contact Sharon Ruggirello, Research Integrity and Compliance Officer at irb@csuchico.edu

At Chico State, we believe in a harm reduction approach to substance use — because every life is valuable, and deserves access to support without judgment. If you or someone you know uses substances, knowing how to recognize and respond to an overdose can save a life.

Recognizing an Overdose:

Overdoses can happen to anyone. Whether intentional or accidental, opioids—including fentanyl—can slow breathing to dangerous levels. Here's what to look for:

  • Slow, irregular, or no breathing
  • Unresponsiveness (won't wake up or react to touch)
  • Bluish, gray, or pale skin, lips, or fingertips
  • Pinpoint pupils
  • Gurgling or choking sounds

How Narcan (Naloxone) Helps:

Narcan is a safe, easy-to-use nasal spray that can reverse opioid overdoses and restore breathing within minutes. It won't harm someone if opioids aren't present, so if you suspect an overdose, it's always better to use it.

Free Narcan Available on Campus:

  • WellCat Health Center
  • 601 Warner St.
  • The WELL
  • BMU 003B

Remember the signs of an opioid overdose, pick up free Narcan on campus, and be prepared with the tools to save a life!

A dedicated team of nursing students is organizing the Kristina Chesterman Memorial 5K Runon April 13th at 9am in Bidwell Park. This event honors Kristina's legacy and supports a cause she deeply cared about—providing healthcare to underserved communities in Nigeria.

Kristina Chesterman was a vibrant and compassionate nursing student at California State University, Chico. Tragically, in September 2013, her life was cut short when she was struck by a drunk driver while riding her bike. Despite her untimely passing, Kristina's spirit of generosity continues to inspire many. In her honor, the Kristina Chesterman Memorial Foundation was established to support nursing students and public health initiatives in underserved communities. One of its significant achievements is the Kristina Chesterman Memorial Clinic in rural Nigeria, which opened in 2019. This clinic provides essential medical care to a community in great need, fulfilling Kristina's dream of making a global impact through nursing.

We are reaching out to ask for your support, whether through a monetary donation or participation in the run. All monetary support and registration costs will directly fund medical supplies, equipment, and resources for the clinic. Your generosity will ensure that Kristina's legacy of compassion and service continues to thrive.

Please visit this link for more information, to register, or to donate! Contact Julie O'Mahony at jqomahony@csuchico.edu for any questions, comments, or concerns.

PASSAGES CAREGIVER RESOURCE CENTER

Passages Caregiver Resource Center provides support to family caregivers in order to ease the physical and emotional challenges of caregiving.

https://www.passagescenter.org/caregivers/about-caregivers/

Who is a Caregiver?

The term caregiver refers to anyone who provides physical, emotional, financial, or logistical support to a loved one with a disabling condition. While many people in this situation do not identify with the term "caregiver," it is important for them to know about the resources available to support them as they care for their loved one. Some examples of caregivers include: a person caring for a spouse who has suffered a stroke; someone caring for a relative who has Parkinson's disease; a grandchild providing assistance to a grandfather with Alzheimer's disease; or a parent caring for a son with a traumatic brain injury.

If you help with any of the following tasks: Preparing meals, bathing and getting dressed, grocery shopping, cleaning the house, managing medications, arranging for services, paying household bills, getting in and out of bed, getting to doctor visits, then…YOU ARE A CAREGIVER!

The most valuable support a family caregiver can receive is from a peer — someone who has been through what they are going through and can truly understand what it is like to care for a loved one. Family caregiver support groups meet once a month and are facilitated by trained staff. Caregivers learn strategies and skills to solve problems; maintain their own personal, physical and emotional health; and to provide the best care they can for those who are dependent upon them. Support Groups provide a supportive atmosphere to share experiences and ideas as a way to ease the stress of caregiving.

This is a recurring event that occurs the 3rd Friday of the month from 12PM-1PM.

Join Safe Place on April 30th by wearing denim in honor of Denim Day!

What is Denim Day?
Denim Day started in 1999 in response to a controversial Italian court ruling that overturned a rape conviction because the victim was wearing tight jeans, implying she could not have been assaulted if she could remove them herself. This ruling sparked outrage and led to the Denim Day movement, where people wore denim to protest victim-blaming and show support for survivors of sexual assault.

Why It's Important:
Denim Day is still an important movement today as we continue to emphasize that clothing is never an excuse for assault. Wearing denim on April 30th is a powerful way to stand in solidarity with survivors and challenge harmful narratives about sexual violence.

Resource Fair:
Join us at Trinity Lawn for a Resource Fair, where we'll be visible in our support for all survivors. Come by to learn about available resources, connect with others, and show your commitment to ending sexual violence.

Let's stand together, Wildcats, and raise awareness for this important cause!

Announced on: Friday, April 11, 2025

Hey Wildcats!

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM), a time dedicated to raising awareness about sexual violence and promoting prevention in our communities. At Safe Place, our goal is to shift the conversation around sexual violence and empower our communities to become active bystanders in the fight to end it.

This month, we want to provide better language and understanding for those sharing their journey, and encourage solidarity with survivors. Wear teal ribbons throughout April to show your support! Don't have one? Visit us at Safe Place (SSC 430) to pick up a ribbon or button!

Safe Place will also be hosting several events this month. You can find more details on CatsConnect or on our website: https://www.csuchico.edu/safeplace/. This year, Safe Place's theme for SAAM is "Celebration of Survivors".

Remember, while many campus employees are mandatory reporters, Safe Place offers confidential advocacy services to students, staff, and faculty. You can share your story with us and receive resources and reporting options—without any obligation. All of our services are voluntary and confidential.

Campus Resources:
· WellCat Safe Place: (530) 898-3030
