About the artist:

You've never met or heard anybody quite like double-platinum recording artist Paul Russell. As a kid, the Dallas, TX native learned how to wail on trumpet in between spitting bars during lunchroom rap battles and later crooning over a ukulele—like the human equivalent of the dopiest playlist you've ever heard. His musical DNA is just as wildly dynamic as his personality.

During his time at Cornell University, he often DJed parties, so he knows how to get it popping. A wide swath of inspirations—from Anderson .Paak and OutKast to Louis Armstrong—has shaped his creative trajectory. He gained traction with a series of early uploads and went viral multiple times, even fooling the internet into thinking he had a Drake feature on the way. After settling in Los Angeles, he released the independent anthem "Hallelujah," followed by "Ms. Poli Sci," which has generated over 37 million streams to date. He then went global with his Arista Records debut, "Lil Boo Thang." Built around an interpolation of "Best of My Love" by The Emotions, the track skyrocketed out of the gate, earning 843 million streams worldwide and landing him performances on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, The Graham Norton Show, the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, American Idol, and more.

In 2024, Paul released his debut EP, which includes the song "Slippin" featuring global superstar Meghan Trainor. He also supported major tours by both Trainor and Teddy Swims. Beyond his status as a bona fide breakout star, Paul Russell is about to be your new best friend.

Digital Humanities Series: Thea Sommerschield, "Generative AI for Studying Latin Inscriptions: Introducing Aeneas," Wednesday, April 22 at 4 PM, on Zoom

Zoom:
https://csuchico.zoom.us/j/88561594318?pwd=MW5CZHpVRHUyOERSRW1WOVpOc09rZz09#success

Recent advances in machine learning are continuously reshaping how historians work with ancient written sources. This talk examines how AI can support (and not replace) historical interpretation through two collaborative projects: Ithaca and Aeneas, which use neural networks to contextualize, restore, attribute and date Greek and Latin inscriptions.
The talk will focus primarily on Aeneas and show how generative models can move quantitative epigraphy beyond simple counting or string matching, by identifying textual and contextual parallels across vast datasets of Latin inscriptions, integrating visual evidence, and proposing probabilistic restorations of damaged texts. It will argue that responsible, transparent AI systems can extend both close and distant reading, helping scholars discover new patterns in the Roman epigraphic record, while preserving interpretive rigor.

Thea Sommerschield is an Assistant Professor in Greek History and Digital Humanities at the Department of Classics and Ancient History of Durham University. Her research develops and applies machine learning models to ancient Mediterranean written cultures, exploring new ways to understand and write about history, and challenging how we think about the ancient world using AI. Since obtaining her DPhil in Ancient History (University of Oxford), Thea has been Leverhulme Fellow (Nottingham), Marie Skłodowska-Curie fellow (Venice), CHS fellow (Harvard) and awardee at the British School at Rome.

To learn more about the Humanities Center, please go to Humanities Center or email Director Erin Kelly at ekkelly@csuchico.edu.

Are you a native or heritage speaker of Spanish with conversational skills but little to no formal training in the language?

SPAN 202N Intermediate Spanish for Heritage Speakers is designed to build on the conversational language skills that students already possess. In this course, students further hone, develop, and expand their abilities in Spanish in different contexts while learning about the value of the Spanish language in the US today. Students also gain a heightened awareness of Hispanic heritage and culture in the US and reflect on their own personal experiences and linguistic practices, including the use of Spanglish, as part of that heritage.

This is an approved General Education (Area 3B) course and fulfills the Global Cultures (GC) graduation requirement.

SPAN 202N also counts toward the minors and majors in Spanish and in Latin American Studies. It also counts toward the bilingual/cross-cultural authorization in Liberal Studies.

This course is offered every semester. In Fall 2026, this class meets TuTh 3:30 – 4:45 PM.

WHEN: Friday, April 17th, 12PM-1PM

WHERE: Hybrid session: meets in-person in SSC 150 AND Zoom -- email Carmy Miller at cmiller80@csuchico.edu for Zoom link prior to meeting date.

The most valuable support a family caregiver can receive is from a peer - who has been through what they are going through and can truly understand what it is like to care for a loved one. Family caregiver support groups meet once a month and are facilitated by trained staff. Caregivers learn strategies and skills to solve problems; maintain their own personal, physical and emotional health; and provide the best care they can for those who are dependent upon them. Support Groups provide a supportive atmosphere to share experiences and ideas to ease the stress of caregiving.

Passages Caregiver Resource Center provides support to family caregivers to ease the physical and emotional challenges of caregiving.

The Caregiver Resource Center is available to caregivers who are caring for a person with a disabling condition that occurred after the age of 18. Some examples of the caregivers we work with include: a person caring for a spouse who has suffered a stroke; someone caring for a relative who has Parkinson's disease; a grandchild providing assistance to a grandfather with Alzheimer's disease; or a parent caring for a son with a traumatic brain injury.

Invasive plants often outcompete co-occurring natives, in part due to higher photosynthetic capacity. But do these advantages arise from evolutionary shifts after introduction or reflect preadaptation in their native range? Dr. Griffin-Nolan presents a large-scale home-away comparison of 27 invasive species (and 17 co-occurring native species) across temperate forest and field habitats on three continents. By combining field gas exchange measurements with detailed analyses of within-leaf nitrogen allocation to photosynthesis vs. defense, the study tests whether invaders achieve higher photosynthetic rates via optimal nitrogen allocation and whether such traits already exist in the invader's native range.

Calling all young writers! This summer, the NCWP is offering an interactive and dynamic space for wordsmiths entering 3rd - 8th grades interested in exploring their inner and outer worlds through poetry, fiction, and nonfiction writing.

Our theme this summer is "Farce, Flash, and Free Verse" and we'll explore one-act plays, flash fiction, and free verse poetic forms, culminating in a student-authored publication and public presentation.

Facilitators:

Marta Shaffer is a Chico State graduate with her MA in creative writing. She is an NCWP Teacher Consultant, having completed the 2022 Summer Institute for educators. She teaches high school English in Oroville, CA. Her favorite picture book is Harold and the Purple Crayon.

Alex Rainey is an elementary school teacher currently at Chico Country Day School, bringing 16 years of experience in nurturing curiosity and creativity in young learners. As a teacher consultant with the NCWP, she continues to explore her own passions. When she's not in the classroom, you'll probably find her chasing big ideas or finding clever ways to make learning feel like magic.
