Film Screening and Discussion: Through a Lens Darkly

The 2014 documentary Through a Lens Darkly: Black Photographers and the Emergence of a People explores the history of black photography, particularly of the 20th-century black family photo album, as a means of fundamentally disrupting the way that photography and film have been significant sources of racist stereotypes and white supremacist narratives about black people. The director, Thomas Allen Harris, is an award-winning and groundbreaking queer black artist, photographer, filmmaker, and academic, and Through a Lens Darkly won the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Documentary, among a host of awards.
