Interview with Fernando
A brief bio (including your major, year, and any extracurricular activities)
- "I am in my senior year of a bachelor's degree in social work. I graduate in May 2025! One more semester to go. As for extracurricular activities, I am the Student Association of Social Workers secretary. I am a proud Air Force veteran and member of both Chico states VETS organization. I am also a proud National Association of Social Workers (NASW) member and a proud member of LULAC, or the League of United Latin American Citizens.”
What inspired you to join the BSS Future Scholars Program?
- “During Social Work Research Methods class, we were asked to research a topic that we found interesting. My assignment partners and I chose to research issues veterans face as they transition from active duty to civilian life. I was amazed at the large gap in research and the veteran community as a whole. After the class, I realized that if I wanted to impact any issue, whether I worked with veterans, homelessness, or anything else, I would need to become proficient in conducting research. Dr. Eggers is someone I admire very much for her advocacy work. I was beyond excited when the opportunity to work with her came along. I am very thankful to her for the time and devotion she gives to her students and myself.”
What has been your most memorable experience in the program so far?
- “Watching my fellow BSS Scholars present their projects was inspiring. I loved watching how dedicated and passionate they were about their projects. Nothing makes me more passionate about my projects than watching others passionate about theirs.”
How has the program impacted your academic and personal growth?
- “Having one-on-one instruction from someone with the research expertise that Dr. Eggers has profoundly impacted how I view research. This learning experience has allowed me to look at research as a means to advocate for those issues that must be addressed. As a social worker with a veteran heart, the BSS Scholars program has given me the knowledge and tools that one day can help bring change and progress in tackling veteran issues requiring research-based answers and options. This experience has allowed me to become more methodical and grounded in my education and what I aim to achieve with it.”
What are your future goals and aspirations?
- “After completing my bachelor’s degree, I intend to pursue my MSW (master’s in social work) and my PsyD or Doctorate in Psychology. I want to work as a clinician for the Department of Veterans Affairs for a few years. Eventually, I want to work with the Latino community, specifically in advocacy and policy work.”
Any advice you would like to share with fellow students?
- “My primary advice to my fellow students is that everything is possible with hard work, focus, and a plan. Find something that makes you dream. Then go out and chase it. Nothing, absolutely nothing, is impossible when your heart and soul are in it.”
