Valerie Singleton was born in Long Beach, CA and moved to Northern California when she was six years old. She attended elementary, junior high, high school and college in Chico, graduating from CSU, Chico with a BA in Liberal Studies and a BA in Child Development. She continued on to earn her Masters in Human Development from Pacific Oaks College, based in Pasadena, CA. Her dream is to earn her PhD in a related field in the future (after she saves money because wow, it’s expensive!).
Her love of children began with babysitting friends and family and continued by enrolling in a child development class in high school. Though she entered university convinced she was going to have a career in government, her first child development course promptly redirected her to a career with children. While in college, she worked as a part time preschool teacher and assistant athletic director at her high school alma mater. After graduation, she became the Director of Innovative Preschool, where she remained for five more years, while she completed her Masters degree. She then worked as the Head Infant/Toddler teacher in the Lemon Room for Google Children’s Centers and LOVED it! She always knew she wanted to work with adults AND children, so when the opportunity arose to become a lecturer at Chico State in 2011, she knew it was meant to be. She currently is the Internship Coordinator for the department, teaching CHLD 282 (Developmentally Appropriate Curriculum: Theory to Practice), CHLD 392 (Child Development Practicum: Advanced), CHLD 492 (Senior Internship in Child Development), and CHLD 456 (Administration of Child Development Programs: Advanced). She feels so blessed that she is able to interact so deeply with each student in the major and knows that she is living the dream every day.
Personally, she has a handsome husband who challenges her every day, two daughters and one son who show her how precious life is, and a supportive family that modeled what unconditional love feels like. She can’t wait for you to join the Child Development family here at Chico State!
