Academic/Research: $200,000 grant with USGS to develop a Serious Game, training emergency managers about aftershock forecasting. Aftershock Forecaster is a desktop PC training game based on USGS earthquake hazard information and aftershock forecasts. Through the game, emergency managers are placed in an immersive city response scenario following a large earthquake. The in-game activity requires critical thinking and problem-solving skills to access USGS aftershock forecast information, understand how it applies to the game environment, and make risk-reduction decisions to benefit the city and its inhabitants. The game is being developed in conjunction with USGS scientists, Chico State Enterprises, Journalism and Public Relations, Media Arts Design and Technology, and Geology departments, and undergraduate students in multiple departments.
