Quick retention fact: Students who come to Chico State without a declared major persist to the second year at rates lower than those of their peers with declared majors. If they do persist, though, these students' time to degree compares favorably with that of others. For this reason, Undergraduate Education, in partnership with Academic Advising Programs, is launching a new program, Major Quest, to help first-year students navigate the University and make an informed and lasting choice of degree program. To support this effort, we invite faculty serve as Faculty Allies for undeclared students. A Faculty Ally is not a formal mentor but simply a friendly campus contact to provide resource referrals and the occasional listening ear. Expectations are detailed here. This is a volunteer role, but would offer a rewarding and relatively light service opportunity, especially for faculty who work with and want to support first year students.
