Southern lore is full of tales of Indigenous haunting. Local myths speak of the demise of Native nations and their fabled ancient pasts. Alongside these legends, contemporary Native Americans endure in their southern homelands. Dr. Elizabeth Ellis (Princeton University) will investigate this dissonance between stories of historic Native demise and modern Indigenous survival in a talk entitled "Myths, Memory, and Indigenous Survival in the Gulf South." Her lecture is based on her award-winning 2022 book, The Great Power of Small Nations: Indigenous Diplomacy in the Gulf South.
