FOREST MANAGEMENT FOR WATER SUPPLIES: EXAMPLES, CHALLENGES, AND OPPORTUNITIES DR. ADRIAN HARPOLD ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR, UNIVERSITY OF NEVADA, RENO Landscape-scale forest disturbances from wildfire and restoration projects are accelerating, but their effects on water supplies are not well understood. Forest disturbance has complex effects on hydrological processes that can lead to more or less snowpack and streamflow. In this talk, Dr. Harpold will explore what climatic and local factors give rise to positive and negative impacts on water resources across the western U.S. He will use the Tahoe Central Sierra Initiative as a case study of how hydrological information can be used to target restoration strategies and monitor their effectiveness. Finally, he will conclude with a discussion of how to improve reservoir management in a time of changing forests, develop decision support tools, and identify new research frontiers where Science could improve forest restoration and post-fire recovery.
