FREE Event ft. 2020 CHEM Nobel Laureate Dr. Jennifer Doudna: "How Bacteria Taught Us to Cure Genetic Disease"

Monday, Apr. 22, 2024, 1–2 p.m.
PAC 144
Free

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry (along with California Section of American Chemical Society and Women in STEM) is proud to host a special presentation on Monday, April 22, featuring the 2020 Nobel Prize winning chemist, Dr. Jennifer Doudna from UC Berkeley of CRISPR fame, as the virtual keynote speaker. Her talk will be targeted toward a student audience (from middle school and up!) and is intended to encourage students to consider a STEM career. Free catered refreshments start in-person at 12pm, women's chemist panel starts in-person at 12:30pm, and her virtual presentation starts at 1pm. Her talk will incorporate elements about her successes and challenges as a woman in STEM, her pathway to finding mentorship to help her flourish in her career and life, and how these factors shaped her identity as a scientist and ultimately contributed to her inspiring research and life. Dr. Doudna will be presenting to us virtually; the title of her talk is, "How Bacteria Taught Us to Cure Genetic Disease."

Following that, there will be Q&A with Dr. Douna at 1:30pm, a breakout discussion at 1:45pm, and free prize giveaways at 2:30pm. We want everyone to join us on campus in PAC 144 because we'd like to have a significant audience in keeping with Dr. Doudna's status.

Please register here by Friday, April 19th at 5pm, as this is important for ordering enough catering for all guests and making sure we have the appropriate number of seats available. This talk is free and open to the public, so please invite your students, student groups, colleagues, friends, family, kids' science teachers, and acquaintances in town and beyond!
