ERTH SEMINAR SERIES May 2, Thurs., 1 – 2pm SCI 142 (NEW LOCATION) STRIVING TO MEASURE EVERYTHING, EVERYWHERE, ALL THE TIME TO UNDERSTAND LINKAGES BETWEEN NUTRIENTS AND PHYTOPLANKTON DR. TAMARA KRAUS, USGS CALIFORNIA WATER SCIENCE CENTER, BIOGEOCHEMISTRY GROUP The US Geological Survey Biogeochemistry Group at the California Water Science Center in Sacramento, CA, investigates how environmental factors and human activities impact water quality, nutrients, and phytoplankton in the complex San Francisco Estuary. Much of their research focuses on the impact nutrient concentrations, forms, and ratios have on water quality and phytoplankton dynamics. Prior research led to the hypothesis that ammonium inputs from the Sacramento County regional wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) were favoring harmful phytoplankton species that produce cyanotoxins over beneficial ones that fuel the lower food web. These findings prompted a significant ~$2 billion upgrade, incorporating biological nutrient removal. The team employs innovative approaches to monitor changes in nutrient concentrations and assess impacts on water quality and phytoplankton communities. Additionally, Dr. Kraus will provide information about her career journey, the USGS Federal Science Agency, and the Biogeochemistry Research team.
