This event will be a lively discussion of our educational system from the perspective of two American Indian educators with a combined 71 years of teaching experience. From the elementary environment to the high school level, racism is a systematic process that stymies the world of public and private education. Some issues that will be considered are: boarding schools, mascots, textbooks, curriculum and history/culture. We look forward to a discussion that will promote an alliance for a more inclusive educational system promoting a life-long path to diversity, equality and inclusion.

Mary Levi is a citizen of the Hopi Tribe, and a descendent of the Tuolumne Me-wuk tribe. She is a retired career elementary educator of 33 years with 31 years in the Upland Unified School district. Her last assignment included both 4th and 5th grades. Her advocacy aims at the development and implementation of accurate Native American curriculum in California. She continues to advocate through the California Teachers Association and is the former Chair of the California Teachers Association's American Indian/Alaska Native Caucus. She enjoys writing Native American Curriculum for Liberated Ethnic Studies Model Curriculum Consortium.

Robert Levi is a citizen of the Torres Martinez Desert Cahuilla Indians. He is also a retired AP/CP U.S. history teacher who taught for 38 years. Recently, he served as a mentor for Cal State Northridge's Ethnic Studies Education Pathways Project. He is currently the inaugural Elder in Residence and special consultant at CSU Santa Barbara. In this role, he sits on a variety of committees to support the work CSUSB conducts in relation to Native/Indigenous people, and he supports the university's efforts in establishing initiatives and partnerships that address the needs of the regional tribal and urban Native communities.
