How do we ensure students know they are cared for? There are a variety of ways to demonstrate your care and commitment to students besides referring them to the CARE Team. Care for students starts with YOU! Below are a few recommendations on ways to express care: Unplug during 1:1's - lock your computer screen, flip your phone over, and show that students have your full attention and presence. Remove barriers - rather than sitting behind your desk, if the space allows, sit in a chair next to your student. Close proximity is a non-verbal cue that a professional is accompanying a student in their development rather than watching from behind the desk. Ask questions - questions can provide more context for the situation and prompt students to explore more deeply the challenges they are facing Remember what they share - reiterate and repeat back the themes and statements you are hearing from the student, this demonstrates that professionals not only listened to the student, but cared enough to commit it to memory. This commitment can build trust. What do they need - We are often quick to help problem solve, take a deep breath and ask the student what they need, and how they see their situation improving. You're the first - while this may be the seventh student to sit in your office with a similar issue, this is the first time the student is sharing this level of information with you as a support person. Take a moment to thank them for feeling comfortable with you and your abilities to best support them. Know campus resources - Invite resources to speak in your spaces, normalize accessing services and support. If you are concerned regarding a students well-being or behavior, refer them to our campus CARE Team, where they will be connected with a web of support services Refer to our CARE Team through Student and Employee CSU Chico Portal "Report a Concern" Phone: 530-898-5093 Email: care@csuchico.edu Unsure where to start?
