The 2019-2021 CalFresh Outreach (CFO) Higher Ed. Contract funds the Center for Healthy Communities to provide training and technical assistance to over 40 college campuses spanning all 3 systems of public higher education in the state of California. Why College Students?

Low-income students now enroll in college at a higher rate than their middle-income peers.

According to Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, everyone, including students, should have their basic needs met to reach their full potential. New research shows that 50% of college students struggle with Food Security.

In addition, a 2016 study (PDF) conducted by CHC found that while 46% of CSU, Chico student respondents suffered from low to very low food security, only 20% of CalFresh Food eligible respondents were enrolled in the CalFresh Food nutrition assistance program.
