Graduate Assistantship: New Student Programs and Family Outreach
CSU Chico Senior Gemma Navarro is heading to Graduate School at Oregon State University to complete her Master of Science in College Student Services Administration. She will also be performing a Graduate Assistantship with New Student Programs and Family Outreach. At Chico State, Gemma double majored in Sociology and Multicultural Gender Studies with and option in Women’s Studies.
During her time at Chico State, Gemma worked as a Residence Advisor, Summer Orientation leader, and as a director for New Student Programs. Gemma’s experience and skills gained through these positions opened her eyes to Student Affairs where she discovered her desire to pursue a master’s degree. Navarro looked into Social Justice and Equal Opportunity programs, and ultimately narrowed her search to four schools.
While applying to the schools, Gemma consistently came into the Career Center to have her career advisor, Jodie Rettinhouse, review her statement of purpose. After perfecting her drafts, Gemma started the interview process with four graduate programs, but the assistantship program and the personable mentors at Oregon State University stood out over the rest.
“Jodie helped me tremendously, and not just with my statement of purpose. Applying to graduate school can be draining and Jodie was very comforting and supportive. She gave me assurance it would be okay.”
Advice from Gemma: “Start looking into graduate programs early and do your research on the schools before applying! Look for schools you can really see yourself at and dive in! “
