About
Dr. DeBock Curriculum Vitae(opens in new window)
Dr. DeBock is a Chico native. After finishing his bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering at CSU Chico in 2010, he earned a master’s degree and PhD in Civil Engineering (with structural emphasis) at CU Boulder, specializing in earthquake engineering. Some of the results of his thesis work can be found in the national design standard, ASCE 7.
After finishing his PhD, Dr. DeBock worked at J.R. Harris and Company Structural Engineers in Denver, Colorado from January 2014 to July 2015. One of his greatest accomplishments at J.R. Harris and Company was building a reliability-targeted snow loading map for the state of Colorado, which was recently adopted by the Structural Engineers Association of Colorado; it is the first ever map of design snow loads that targets structural reliability (or risk), rather than hazard.
Dr. DeBock returned to Chico State, this time as a professor, in Fall 2015. He has taught Strengths of Materials and Reinforced Concreted Design, and he looks forward to teaching additional structural engineering courses as well. Since joining the Civil Engineering department, Dr. DeBock has worked on a variety of projects, mostly related to earthquake engineering. His primary interests involve earthquake risks to individual buildings as well as large building portfolios; his line or work requires expertise in state of the art nonlinear structural modeling and analysis, as well as the ability to apply probability and statistics to complex data sets.
When he is not at work, Dr. DeBock can be found spending time with his wife Kristi, going for a run, or mountain biking- if there is not enough time for a bike ride in the park, sometimes he will stay home and ride his unicycle instead.
