Wes Hocking Curriculum Vitae (PDF)

As an undergraduate, Wes worked summers and part-time for a local civil engineering firm as a surveyor and draftsman, where he developed his love of engineering.  After graduation from CSU Chico in 1978, he was employed continuously with Culp and Tanner, Structural Engineers as a Project Engineer and Director of Investigate Engineering Services until his retirement in 2021.  His 42 years of professional experience has given him a diverse resume of project experience, including design and construction administration of flagship resort hotels, high-rise concrete and structural steel office buildings, parking structures, and condominiums.  As the Director of Investigative Services, he has performed over 140 property claims investigations for numerous insurance companies, adjustors, and attorneys.

From 2011 - 2012, he taught Structural Mechanics classes at CSU Chico, and found he loved teaching young engineers, mixing traditional classroom curriculum with his real-world design experience.  Since 2019, he has taught a variety of courses – Statics, Structural Mechanics, Reinforced Concrete Design, Steel Design, and Timber Design.

When not at work, as a “soccer nut” (his wife’s description), he is both a licensed soccer referee and referee instructor, and currently serves as president the board of directors of Chico Youth Soccer League, a local recreational soccer league for approximately 1,000 youth ages 5 – 14.
