Head Start Programs

Meeting Nutrition & Dietitian Needs

Center for Healthy Communities has developed partnerships with three Head Start Programs that span across 12 Northern California Counties. Each contract is tailored to the specific nutrition and dietitian related needs of that organization. CHC offers services such as nutrition education, individually tailored meal plans, and many other nutrition related consulting services for staff, parents, and children through these partnerships. Details of the services offered to each Head Start Program are listed below.

Tehama

CHC has partnered with Northern California Child Development Group, Inc. (NCCDI)(opens in new window) since 2015 to provide wrap-around nutrition services for the enrolled children, their families, and the NCCDI staff.

Services Offered

  • Nutrition assessment completed and appropriate information given to every child enrolled in the program.
  • Nutrition referral and counseling services to families of any child at nutritional risk. This includes children who require any therapeutic diet or who are underweight, overweight, or anemic.
  • Annually review and update menus to ensure Child and Adult Care Food Program requirements are met.
  • Provide technical assistance and training to Nutrition Coordinators and other staff as needed or requested.
  • Provide parent trainings as requested.

E Center

E Center(opens in new window)is a non-profit organization that provides head start, early head start, migrant head start, WIC services, and more to nine Northern California Counties. Center for Healthy Communities has contracted with E Center since 2019 to provide nutrition services to children, families, and staff.

  • Provide technical assistance and training to Nutrition Coordinators, Food Service Managers, food service staff, and other staff as needed or requested.
  • Nutrition referral and counseling services to families of any child at nutritional risk at the request of the family, family worker, or other E Center staff.

Shasta

Shasta Head Start Child Development, INC. (SHS)(opens in new window) is a non-profit providing child care and social services to Shasta, Siskiyou, and Trinity Counties. CHC has partnered with SHS since 2020, forging a partnership through the early part of the COVID-19 pandemic to serve the nutrition needs of the children and families enrolled in their program.

Services Offered

  • Individual Nutrition Plans completed for children enrolled in the program and identified with nutrition related concerns. This includes anemia, underweight, overweight, short statue, constipation, or severe allergies.
  • Child Diet Orders completed for children enrolled in the program who have a medical statement or parent request necessitating alternate foods to be served due to a food allergy or intolerance, medical condition, religious preference, or other family preference.
  • Nutrition referral and counseling services to families of any child at nutritional risk at the request of the family, family worker, or other SHS staff.
  • Annually review and approve menus to ensure Child and Adult Care Food Program requirements are met.
  • Provide technical assistance and training to Nutrition Coordinators, Food Service Managers, food service staff, and other staff as needed or requested.
