Led by Dean Angela Trethewey, the College of Communication & Education (CME) has a rich history of excellence. California State University, Chico, often referred to as "Chico State," was founded in 1887 as the Chico State Normal School. "Normal schools" were institutions dedicated to preparing teachers and were named after the Latin word for "standard" (as in setting a high standard for educators). Chico State Normal School grew in size and mission to serve the needs of the North State, becoming California State University, Chico in 1972. Within the now-comprehensive university, the College of Communication & Education continues the honorable tradition of preparing educators and communicators.
