Robert Noyce Scholarships

Our Robert Noyce Scholarship program is in final review by the National Science Foundation. This program is funded by the National Science Foundation (DUE-1758522). There are no new scholarships from this grant.

There will be no call for applications for Fall 2023/Spring 2024.

Goal of Scholarship

The Robert Noyce Scholars program aims to encourage talented Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) majors and professionals to enter into the teaching profession and teach mathematics or science at the secondary level. Undergraduate Noyce Scholars receive $12,250 toward tuition and fees, and $2,000 to fund additional extended learning opportunities, such as: working in the Chico State Hands-On Learning (HOL) Lab, Chico State Summer Research Institutes, the Science Teacher Researcher (STAR) program, and the Learning Assistant (LA) Program.                                                                      
Credential Noyce Scholars have professional development integrated into their academic program. The time commitment to the Credential Program limits the opportunities to be involved in outside professional development and extended learning opportunities, so the full $13,250 they receive goes toward tuition and fees.

Noyce Scholars will be selected by consideration of academic achievement, under-representation and financial need. Scholarships will be awarded on a competitive basis. Selected Scholars are also involved in professional development and networking opportunities. In return, scholars agree to teach two years in a high school or middle school in a “high need” (see FAQ for high need definitions) school district for each full year of support and participate in research surveys conducted by the Noyce Scholars program.

Given the nature of the large award, Noyce Scholars may not be eligible for MSTI scholarships during the same academic year. However, we encourage you to apply for both.

Eligibility Requirements

In order to be considered for a Noyce Scholarship you must:

• be a CSUC junior or senior undergraduate or graduate student at time of award
• have a minimum 2.75 GPA in the last 60 semester (or 90 quarter) units of coursework
• be a U.S. Citizen, national or permanent resident alien
• have a course plan that will allow for the completion of a single subject credential in mathematics or science
• after initial review, successful candidates will be asked to a mandatory interview.

Selection Criteria

• Commitment to teach secondary mathematics or science, as evidenced by participation in programs aimed at future teachers (e.g., PROJECT MATH(opens in new window),  a degree program designed for future teachers, etc.) or other teaching-related activities
• Academic performance
• Financial need (not required, but consideration for financial need will be a selection criteria)
• Quality of required written essay; preference given to applicants with evidence of commitment to teach in high needs schools
• Strength of recommendations (two recommendations will be required)

Scholarships are subject to approval of funding.
