A team of six students from California State University, Chico took first place among 13 teams in the 10th annual Western States Collegiate Sales Competition (WSCSC) April 24 and 25.

First place for overall team performance went to CSU, Chico, which earned 91.9 points out of 100; the University of Texas, Dallas took second place with 90.8 points; and third place went to Baylor University, which secured 88.4 points.

Hosted by the College of Business’s Professional Sales Program and the Chico State Career Center since 2009, the WSCSC is the only multi-university sales competition in the western United States.

Preparation for the contest begins in February each year, when students at each university participate in training sessions hosted by corporate sponsors. The competition culminates in a series of live sales scenarios at CSU, Chico. More than 150 people participated in this year’s event.

The Chico State team was comprised of Morgan Ardito, Alyvia Berryhill, Jennifer Bosse and Jay Virdee, while Katie Nicca and Ryan Winger served as backup contestants.

“Not only did the team learn the importance of the individual in the sales process, but they also acquired an understanding of the importance that teamwork plays in enabling individual performers to circumspectly improve their game,” said Tim Heinze, director of the Professional Sales Program. “All in all, both the team and the individuals on the team worked flawlessly to deliver winning results.”

Universities competing in the 2014 WSCSC were Arizona State University; Ball State University; Baylor University; California State University, Chico; California State University, Fullerton; Georgia State University; Oregon State University; San Diego State University; University of Central Oklahoma; University of Portland; University of San Diego; University of Texas, Dallas; and Washington State University, Vancouver.

CSU, Chico’s Professional Sales Program provides students with practical sales experiences and opportunities to test their skills against students from other leading business schools. Students may earn a certificate in professional sales, highlighting their expertise in professional selling and differentiating them among their peers.
