CSU, Chico Students Continue Domination at Sales Competition

California State University, Chico students continued a string of outstanding performances April 14-15 by once again winning the Western States Collegiate Sales Competition.

The CSU, Chico student team competed against 13 university teams from around the country and for the sixth year in a row came out on top. In addition, CSU, Chico students took three of the four individual performance awards.

The competition was hosted on campus by the College of Business’ Seufferlein Sales Program and the Chico State Career Center. Approximately 200 people took part in the event, including more than 50 representatives from the Seufferlein Sales Program’s corporate partnership group.

University team members are judged for their skills in role playing sales situations. The two role plays, based on situations from corporations Frito-Lay and Blackberry, were streamed live to competition judges.

The CSU, Chico team was comprised of Amanda Zenette, Kayla Sumpter and Dylan Brix. Business professor Kristin Minetti served as the team’s coach. 

“Chico State is a special place. Professors take a personal interest in their students’ success, and that personal interest translates into superior team performance,” said Professor Tim Heinze, executive director of the Seufferlein Sales Program. “I watched this year’s coach, Kristin Minetti, spend untold ‘off-the-clock’ hours to ensure that the Chico team was prepared for every possible competition contingency. Her dedication, and the teams’ scrappy persistence, led the students to a very hard-earned win.”

Finishing behind CSU, Chico in the standings were Baylor University; University of Wisconsin, Whitewater; Georgia State UniversityUniversity of San Diego and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, in second through sixth place, respectively.

The following corporations provided funding for the competition: ADP, Frito-Lay, Aerotek, Blackberry, Hewlett Packard, Comcast, Liberty Mutual, Henry Schein, TEKsystems, DHL, IBM, Salesforce.com, Enterprise Holdings, Ferguson, Lennox, Yelp!, Paychex, Impact Marketing, Philadelphia Insurance, Graybar, Victaulic, United Rentals, G&K Services, Southern Wine & Spirits, Specialist Staffing Group, Sherwin Williams, and Cintas. 

CSU, Chico came in second at the first California Collegiate Sales Competition in 2005 and won the top spot the following year. The competition was renamed the Western States Collegiate Sales Competition in 2007. CSU, Chico came in second in 2010 but has now won all the competitions since that time.

CSU, Chico’s Seufferlein Sales Program provides students with practical sales experiences and opportunities to test their skills against students from other leading business schools. Students may earn a certificate in professional sales, highlighting their expertise in professional selling and differentiating them among their peers.
