Students Offer Free Tax-Preparation Services

California State University, Chico’s chapter of Beta Alpha Psi, an honorary organization for financial information students and professionals, has once again partnered with the International Revenue Service to provide free tax-preparation services starting Saturday, Feb. 1.

The services are available to anyone who earned less than $54,000 during 2015.

CSU, Chico accounting students, in conjunction with the IRS’ Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, will prepare and electronically file the returns for free.  

 Those interested in the service should bring

  • A copy of their 2015 tax return
  • Social Security or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number cards for the entire family
  • Photo identification
  • Wages and earnings statements (W-2, 1099, 1098)
  • Documentation for deductions and credits
  • Child care documentation with provider identification number and amount paid
  • A voided check for direct deposit of refund

 Tax preparation services will be available at the following times and locations:

Bell Memorial Union, CSU, Chico 
Mondays, Feb. 1—April 4
10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Dorothy Johnson Center, 775 E. 16th St., Chico
Saturdays, Feb. 6—April 9 (except March 19)
9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Chico Area Recreation District, 545 Vallombrosa Ave., Chico
Mondays and Wednesdays, Feb. 1—April 6 (except March 14 and 16)
Noon to 4 p.m.

VITA trains volunteers to provide tax-preparation services to those who need it most. Student volunteers must pass tax exams at several levels. 

This marks the sixth year that CSU, Chico has been a partner in VITA, and the fifth year the University has had a site on campus organized by students.

Beta Alpha Psi was founded in 1919 and has 263 chapters on college and university campuses. The organization promotes the study and practice of accounting, finance and information systems; provides opportunities for self-development, service and association among members and practicing professionals; and encourages a sense of ethical, social and public responsibility.
