The Chico State College of Business’ newest Program of Distinction, the Center for Excellence in Finance, hosted the first-ever Chico Financial Planning Day event on April 7, 2018. The event offered free financial planning resources to the Chico community. The event was held at the Chico Masonic Family Center at 1110 W. East Ave.

“Financial Planning Day offers such a great opportunity for our students, faculty and staff, and the entire community,” said the program director Emily Huang. “Events like these give our students real-world experience in working with clients and gives the community vital information on financial decisions such as buying a home, paying for college or achieving a secure retirement.”

Held during national financial literacy month, the event is designed to help bring financial planning resources to people who otherwise would not have access to them. Four Certified Financial Planner (CFP) professionals were available to answer any questions from the public regarding financial planning or money topics. Common topics included budgeting, credit and debt, investing, taxes, home ownership, estate planning, insurance, small business and more.

Each participant had an opportunity to speak with a CFP professional privately about their financial concerns and receive helpful information to make better monetary decisions. The Center for Excellence in Finance aspires to include this event once per semester in conjunction the Financial Planning Association, the national organization that hosts financial planning days around the country.

The event received extremely positive feedback. Many participants claimed to have never received advice from a financial advisor before simply because they did not know where to start or find a CFP professional.

“The CFP students I spoke with were incredibly helpful, and [they] gave me encouragement and motivation to get my housing finances in order,” one participant said.

“The Center for Excellence in Finance is another example of how the College of Business offers incredible programs that serve the community-at-large while helping students to be career-ready,” said Interim Dean Dr. Ken Chapman. “Not only do students get the opportunity to apply their knowledge and work of their interpersonal skills, they do this knowing they are helping others. What a great win-win.”

The Center for Excellence in Finance works to advance financial wellness in the campus community as well as provide financial career opportunities for finance students at Chico State. For more information, please contact the Center for Excellence in Finance at CEF@csuchico.edu.
