Robert Madrigal

The American Marketing Association’s (AMA) Sport & Sponsorship Linked Marketing Special Interest Group (SportSIG) has named California State University, Chico’s own sports marketing professor Robert Madrigal as a major award winner for 2019.

Madrigal has been awarded this year’s Distinguished Career Contributions to the Scientific Understanding of Sport Business Award, one of its highest honors.

“The AMA is one of the largest and most widely recognized professional organizations in business,” said College of Business Dean Terence Lau. “In addition to influencing the way companies think about marketing, the AMA has a scholarly mission and publishes some of the very top journals in marketing. Dr. Madrigal's award of the Distinguished Career Contributions to the Scientific Understanding of Sport Business award is a broad external recognition of the tremendous impact his research has had on this field. We're very proud of Bob and all that he has accomplished to further our understanding of sports marketing and sponsorship.”

Madrigal's work on sport marketing and sponsorship has been cited more than 5,500 times and was published in the Journal of Advertising, Journal of Consumer Psychology, Psychology & Marketing, Journal of Business Research, and the Journal of Business Ethics. Madrigal has been a mentor to dozens of doctoral students, with 10 student co-authors appearing on papers that were published in the past 10 years.

Madrigal served as the academic director of the Warsaw Sports Marketing Center at the University of Oregon, where he earned his doctoral degree in 1990. Madrigal has also taught at The Ohio State University and Arizona State University.

“CSU, Chico is fortunate to have a scholar of this magnitude,” said professor Kirk Damon Aiken. “I’ve known Bob for more than 20 years. His work ethic as a professor and scholar is remarkable. Bob’s work has had a tremendous impact in the field of sports marketing, and this award is well deserved!”
