  • May 2020 virtual ceremony

The virtual ceremony is not a replacement for an in-person ceremony. We look forward to hosting a formal Commencement ceremony specifically for the Class of 2020 in May 2021.

On May 15th at 4 p.m. Pacific Chico State's virtual Commencement ceremony page will go live. It's not a live event If you're not available at that time, don't worry, the page will stay up for many months.

    Click to visit:

We will celebrate our grads on May 15 in a virtual ceremony because it is the day of their achievement and we want to recognize the special day. It is the best way for us to recognize our graduates in the immediate term. We know that many will not be able to attend in 2021 and that May 15 may be the culminating event for many students. We will make as special and unique as possible.

You'll hear video remarks from President Hutchinson, members of the platform party, and student reflections speakers. Then, click through or search for slides to hear names of graduates read, with accompanying pictures and personal statements. Each slide can be downloaded to save or shared on social media.

To participate, students first need to register for the ceremonies here [LINK]. Then they will be sent an email inviting them to personalize their slide with a  photo and quote.

  • Is the virtual ceremony a live event?

The virtual ceremony is not a live event. It is a webpage that will be accessible for many months. There will be pre-recorded videos from the President, Provost, students, and other distinguished speakers. You will be able to search for you and your friend's profiles. When you click on a profile the pre-recorded name will be announced. You will see all of the degree information, honors, and awards displayed alongside a photo and personal message. You can click through as many profiles as you want. The profiles can be downloaded and shared on social media.

  • When will the in-person ceremony for the Class of 2020 happen?

We will announce specific dates when they are available. However, there will be a separate ceremony specifically for the Class of 2020 next May.

  • What about a summer, fall, or winter rescheduled ceremony?

A fall or winter ceremony is not a possibility at this time. Our Governor, the CDC, and many experts are indicating that large gatherings like concerts, sporting events, and commencement ceremonies will be the last part of our society to return. We believe it is prudent to plan for an event we can deliver for our grads and not one that has a high probability of cancellation.

Even if the State of California relaxes regulations on events this fall, scheduling a commencement after fall semester is not possible. Chico and the surrounding area lacks adequate indoor venue space to hold events of this size. Weather in December can be cold and rainy, eliminating the option for an outdoor stadium event. During a commencement weekend, approximately 27,000 people participate in Chico State ceremonies.

  • Will my graduation application fee be refunded?

No. Graduation and Commencement are separate. Graduation is completing your degree requirements and receiving your diploma. Commencement is the ceremony where you walk across the stage. The graduation application fee is due one year in advance of completing your degree requirements. It funds many aspects of graduation including part of the Commencement ceremony, graduates’ diplomas, mailing, etc. Graduating seniors should pay their fee as scheduled so that their diplomas can be issued after the completion of their degree requirements by the Registrar’s office. This is a fee paid by all students whether or not they participate in the Commencement ceremony.

  • Hotel refunds

The Office of Commencement has surveyed many of the hotels in the area and all are providing cancellations and full refunds. If you are having any trouble canceling a reservation make sure to first contact the property directly (not the 800 number). If you continue to have issues please alert our office by contacting commencement@csuchico.edu.
