Social Justice Statement
We at the WellCat Counseling Center stand in solidarity with Black Lives Matter and anti-racism efforts to dismantle systematic racism and White supremacy. As mental health professionals, we recognize the profound impact of perpetual oppression, violence, and systematic racism has on the mental health and wellbeing of the global majority in our society. As a staff, it is a core value to stand against social injustice and hate in all forms. It is our responsibility to examine and question institutional policies and procedures that promote racism. It is also our duty to have difficult conversations that challenge long-standing White supremacist ideologies and deconstruct oppressive systems.
As a staff of predominantly white counselors, we recognize that representation is important. We pledge to advocate for more diversity among our staff and increase efforts to improve counseling practices to promote inclusion and equity. Additionally, we want to acknowledge and celebrate the diversity that we do have on our staff. We strive to establish a safe and inviting environment to serve our students of color to process the effects of systematic oppression and racism without fear of judgment, retaliation, or platitudes.
We must work to decolonize the field of counseling. We acknowledge that counseling is rooted in European beliefs and systems. We must unflinchingly examine and challenge the assumptions on which our field is based. This means recognizing and supporting various forms of healing practices.
We believe that issues such as prejudice, discrimination, and racism are fundamental parts of counseling. Being neutral is no longer an option nor acceptable because it maintains the status quo and suggests change is not needed. It is our duty to create a school culture free from racism, discrimination, prejudice, and bias. As counselors, we have a unique opportunity to be an important part of the solution. We are committed to leaning into the discomfort and tension. As healers, we will recognize the possibility that privilege has an impact on our interactions and may influence our perspectives and practices. We will continue to work towards a more equitable service. We must and will challenge our own biases, prejudices, stereotypes, worldview, and how this significantly impacts marginalized communities. The WellCat Counseling Center seeks to provide support, care, and compassion for individuals of all backgrounds, identities, and beliefs. We want you to know that we stand with you and we are here for you. Currently, we are offering telehealth services. If you are interested in services, please call our office at (530) 898-6345.
