Terms & Conditions

Chico State Info & Updates is a standard-rate SMS/text program that provides subscribers recurring updates about important student information from Chico State. Message and data rates may apply. By opting into the Chico State Info & Updates program, subscribers agree to receive messages from Chico State via short code 33802 and understand that consent is not a condition of service.

Privacy Policy

Information We Collect

We collect information about you when you apply to the Universitywhen you voluntarily submit inquiry forms to the University and/or third-party data providers, and when you attend campus events.  Some examples include:

  • Data that you provide during the CSU application process in Cal State Apply
  • Data that you provide at a college fair or other recruitment event
  • Data that you provide through opt-in forms on University websites
  • Data that you provide during event registrations
  • Data that you provide during registration for any of our University services
  • Data that you provide to University departments and student services units throughout the course of your time as a student at the University
  • Data provided to us by third-party data vendors, such as College Board

We receive personal information about you from our third party or business partners with whom we have a contractual relationship, such as College Board.  When we get information from a third party, we typically receive limited contact information, and we collect the rest of the personal information directly from you when you interact with us.  We do not sell your personal information and we comply with the California Consumer Privacy Act.

How We Use Your Data

The personal information that we collect is used to perform our contractual obligations, as well as to serve and communicate with you (per your consent) based on legitimate needs. We use your personal information for the following purposes:

  • Standard student communications including application status, enrollment information, event reminders, student standing, financial updates, etc.
  • Mmarketing campaignspromotionsand .
  • To investigate, respond to, and resolve complaints and service issues.
  • To communicate about the availability and/or quality of our services and/or about other service-related issues.
  • To protect your security through security investigations and fraud investigations/prevention.

How We Share Your Personal Information

Chico State follows the guidelines of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974.

We use other vendors and partners to help provide services as part of our product ecosystem. They will have access to your information as reasonably necessary to perform their tasks on our behalf. The vendors are obligated not to disclose or use your data for other purposes.

It is possible that we will need to disclose information about you when required by law, subpoena, or other legal process, or if we have a good faith belief that disclosure is reasonably necessary.  We will attempt to notify you about legal demands for your personal data when appropriate in our judgment, unless prohibited by law or court order or when the request is an emergency. We may dispute such demands when we believe, in our discretion, that the requests are overbroad, vague or lack proper authority, but we do not promise to challenge any demand.  Some example situations include:

  • Investigateing, preventing, or taking action regarding suspected or actual illegal activities or to assist government enforcement agencies
  • Enforcement of our agreements with you
  • Investigateing and defending ourselves against any third-party claims or allegations
  • Protecting the security or integrity of our service (such as by sharing with companies facing similar threats).

Data Retention

Chico State retains personal information for as long as we have a legitimate business relationship with you, or with an organization with which you are affiliated (such as your employer). We may also retain personal information about prospective students or prospective employees until consent is withdrawor it has been a period of two years since you’ve provided consent and you no longer have a relationship with us. We also may retain your personal information for as long as necessary to comply with our legal or contractual obligations.

Your Consent

By consenting to this privacy policy you are giving us permission to process your personal data specifically for the purposes identified. Consent is required for Chico State to process personal data for the purposes stated above, but it must be explicitly given. When we ask you for sensitive personal data we will always tell you why, and how the information will be used. You may withdraw consent at any time by contacting the oats@csuchico.eduand/or by opting-out (as described in the Opting-Out section above)
