Brief Bio

(translated by Sara E. Cooper, from sources listed below)

(Havana, December 2, 1934) Díaz Llanillo studied Language and Literature at the University of Havana (1952-1957). In 1959 she was awarded the Ph.D. and was honored with the special distinction of the Antonio Barrera prize from the Department of Cuban and Hispanoamerican Literature, for her thesis  The Art of Novel-Writing of Hernández Catá. She worked at the Casa de las Americas from 1959-1961. Between 1973 and 1975 she did literary research with the Institute of Literature and Linguistics of the Academy of Sciences of Cuba. She has published [among many others] the short story collection  El castigo and  Cambio de vida, in which are contained sections titled Cambio de vida and Regresión, both of which received an honorable mention in the 1999 and 2000 Alejo Carpentier competitions, respectively. In 2004 she was given the Prize of Distinction for National Culture. In 2005, she published Entre latidos, with Unión Press. (La Jiribilla)

In [Díaz Llanillo's] work various themes stand out: God, justice, the relationship between God and man, aloneness, and death. Also prevalent are stories dealing with subjective personal problems, psychological problems, fantasy, black humor, etc. The settings that she creates are real spaces such as the library, the home, the kitchen as an accidental place, the conference room, etc. Many times within these quotidian spaces the unexpected will interrupt, and her characters find themselves troubled by threatening forces who control them. Esther Díaz Llanillo gives us protagonists who are trapped in an atmosphere of anguish and desperation. In other circumstances, her protagonists take part in extraordinary events that change their daily routine. In 1999 this Cuban writer publishes the book  Cuentos antes y después del sueño [Stories before and after Sleeping]. The text is divided in two parts: "Stories before Sleeping" (nine tales) had been written in her youth and were published under the title  El castigo (Havana, R press, 1966). They also appeared in anthologies and journals. The stories included in the second section, "Stories after Sleeping" (15 tales) are stories written with a great deal of imagination, conserving the suspense and surprises of the earlier ones. These were written approximately starting in 1990 and also may be found in anthologies within and without Cuba. For Esther Díaz Llanillo, the "sleeping" represents the close to 30 years in which she published nothing, although she did continue writing for herself."
