Margarita Mateo Palmer

Brief Biography

Margarita Mateo Palmer (Havana, 1950) Essayist, prose writer and university professor. Ph.D. in Literary Sciences from the University of Havana. Inducted member of the Cuban Academy of Language. Over the last forty years, she has taught literature, as a professor of the Arts & Letters Department of the University of Havana and at the Superior Institute of Art.

Among her most important works one must note: Del bardo que te canta (1988), Ella escribía poscrítica (1995), Paradiso: la aventura mítica (winner of the Alejo Carpentier Prize, 2002), El Caribe en su discurso literario (co-authored with Luis Álvarez, winner of the Caribbean Thought Prize, 2002-2003, Quintana Roo, 2003),  El palacio del pavorreal: el viaje mítico (winner of the Enrique José Varona Prize from UNEAC, 2006),  the novel Desde los blancos manicomios (winner of the Alejo Carpentier Prize, 2008) and El misterio del eco (2011).

In 2014 Mateo was awarded the UNEAC Essay Prize for her work Dame el siete, tebano. La prosa de Antón Arrufat. On six occasions she has been granted the National Literary Critics Prize.

Breve Biografía

Margarita Mateo Palmer (La Habana, 1950) Ensayista, narradora y profesora. Doctora en Ciencias Literarias por la Universidad de La Habana. Miembro de número de la Academia Cubana de la Lengua. Durante cuarenta años ha impartido clases de literatura. Fue profesora  de la Facultad de Artes y Letras de la Universidad de La Habana y del  Instituto Superior de Arte.

Entre sus obras más importantes se pueden citar: Del bardo que te canta (1988), Ella escribía poscrítica (1995), Paradiso: la aventura mítica (Premio Alejo Carpentier, 2002), El Caribe en su discurso literario (en coautoría con Luis Álvarez, Premio al Pensamiento Caribeño 2002-2003 del Estado de Quintana Roo, 2003),  El palacio del pavorreal: el viaje mítico (Premio Enrique José Varona de la UNEAC, 2006),  la novela Desde los blancos manicomios (Premio Alejo Carpentier, 2008) y El misterio del eco(2011).

En 2014 obtuvo el Premio de ensayo de la UNEAC con Dame el siete, tebano. La prosa de Antón Arrufat . Ha obtenido en seis ocasiones el Premio Nacional de la Crítica Literaria.
