Juanamaría Cordones-Cook and Co-Translators

Juanamaría Cordones-Cook

A member of the Uruguayan Academy of Arts, Juanamaría Cordones-Cook is a professor of contemporary Spanish-American literature at the University of Missouri and an award winning filmmaker.  Her work in critical theory covers themes in post-colonial feminism, culture, and Afro-Hispanic literature.  She has published extensively in the United States, Latin America, and Europe. Professor Cordones-Cook has also served as guest editor for professional journals, such as Revista Iberoamericana, Letras Femeninas,and, Callaloo.  Her books include:Poética de transgresión en Luisa Valenzuela (1991), ¿Teatro negro uruguayo? (1996), Looking Within/Mirar adentro (2003), a best-selling bilingual anthology of poetry by Nancy Morejón, and Soltando amarras y memorias (2009).  She has also published three critical anthologies of theater: Mujeres en las tablas (2005) and Más allá del héroe (2008), Del palenque a las tablas (2012 and 2013), a critical anthology of Afro-Latin American theater, and two bilingual anthologies of poetry, La Habana expuesta/Havana on Display (2012) and NM-RB: Dos mujeres una isla / Two Women, One Island (2014).Recently, she has been producing and directing a series of videos and documentaries on intellectuals of the African Diaspora in Cuba and the United States.

María Rodriguez-Alcalá

María Rodriguez-Alcalá was born in Asunción, Paraguay. She left her home country after graduating from high school to study in the U.S. Since then she has moved around the U.S. and Brazil and is now currently living in Columbia, Missouri. She has always been interested in literature perhaps because she comes from a family of critics and writers. Although her career is in the area of agricultural and applied economics, she has taken several courses in Latin American literature through the years. After joining the University of Missouri, she began collaborating in interdisciplinary projects involving arts and literature.

Alexander Michael Cordones Cook

Born in California, Alexander Michael Cordones Cook first took an interest in Spanish-American literature in high school after meeting and spending time with Nancy Morejón and Luisa Valenzuela. He continued his literary studies at Princeton University where he graduated with honors in Comparative Literature and wrote his senior thesis on post-modern representations of male sexual anxiety in Caribbean and Argentine short fiction. He has translated documentaries, essays, and poetry.
