CURE-E Course: Intro to Agricultural Business (ABUS 101), first introduced with CURE-E Fall 2021
Project Title: Exploring “Big” Questions in Agriculture Using Stakeholder-Driven Research
Students in agriculture are often expected to be experts in complex social and policy issues (e.g., ag and the environment), but do not often feel prepared to play that role. This CURE-E is driven by my interest in increasing students’ awareness of and literacy in complex agricultural issues, and their self-efficacy about finding answers to questions they may encounter.
Students will identify and describe a stakeholder “persona” and formulate a relevant research question for that stakeholder that can be answered using publicly available data including the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Census of Agriculture.
Because of the complexity of the research question development process, students will not be required to develop research results during the initial semester of implementation. Students will identify useful data sources and brainstorm hurdles to answering their research questions. Extra credit will be offered to student groups who are interested in conducting research and presenting results to the class.
