Electrical Conductivity

How do electrical conductivity values help us?

Resource: Water Science School - Conductivity and Water (USGS)

Electrical conductivity (EC) is a measure of the ability of water to pass an electrical current. Dissolved salts and inorganic chemicals conduct an electrical current, so conductivity increases as salinity increases. Changes in conductivity measurements indicate a disturbance to the stream, including dilution during storms, increased salinity during dry periods, or pollution.
