The Data Science Initiative at Chico State aims to be a hub of DS information and resources for campus and community. Our vision is to foster a data-empowered society working within a culture of open science. You can read our Mission statement here.

What is Data Science?

Data science is a multi-disciplinary field that uses scientific methods, processes, algorithms and systems to extract knowledge and insights from structured and unstructured data. [Wikipedia]

Being able to collect, prepare and analyze data to inform high level decisions critical in our current global society, both for social and scientific benefit. Companies are increasingly putting data at the center stage in their strategic priorities, including Chico State.

Called “the sexiest job of the 21st century” in 2012, the demand for people who can capture, process, maintain, reason with, rigorously analyze, visually present and most importantly, communicate the findings and create recommendations has skyrocketed in the last decade. The demand still to this day far outweighs the number of individuals with these skills.
