Blackboard Migration to SaaS

CSU Chico's Blackboard system will switch from being hosted in BB's Managed Hosting data center, to a cloud-based offering known as "SaaS" (Software as a Service). This decision was made based on the need to guarantee uptime and stability, and to meet increasing storage requirements.

This work will include a full migration of all data on the system. All existing content and records will remain exactly as they are today. See below for more information and additional benefits included with this change.

This change was originally scheduled as a three-day downtime from December 25-27th, 2019, but we finished work early on December 26th. Blackboard was unavailable for two days, but it should be back to normal operation just like you left it.

When will this happen? What services will be unavailable?

This migration does require some downtime:

  • Start: Wednesday, December 25 at 12:01 AM
  • End: Friday, December 27 at 11:59 PM (Note: finished early on the 26th by 5 PM)
  • Duration: 3 days

Some services will be unavailable during the above window:

  • Blackboard Learn
  • Turnitin assignments linked from Blackboard
  • Publisher courseware linked from Blackboard
  • Kaltura videos linked from Blackboard

Instructors should note that grades for the Fall 2019 term are due in PeopleSoft by December 31, 2019. While Blackboard is offline, you will not be able to access an online version of Blackboard's Grade Center features. If you are able to complete your work outside of the migration window, no action is required. If you must work during the migration window, feel free to download a copy of your Blackboard Grade Center data ahead of time so that you can work offline.

What are the benefits of SaaS?

The SaaS delivery model is more flexible than our current hosting plan:

Reduced downtime. After this change is complete, we will be able to complete most maintenance updates without ever taking Blackboard offline.

Higher quality. Because we will receive continuous software updates, we will always be running the latest bug fixes from Blackboard.

Faster access to new features. The SaaS model allows us to deliver new features faster than we have in the past.

Peace of mind. Blackboard's experienced hosting team will be on-duty 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, so that our technicians can focus on other strategic priorities.

Information for faculty

  • Blackboard will be unavailable from December 25-27th during the migration.
  • If you need a copy of your Grade Center files during the downtime, you can download a copy and work offline.
  • If you need to contact students during the downtime, you can find a class roster in the Faculty Center within PeopleSoft.
